The techniques of editing are remarkably powerful. Most were worked out more than a century ago, but they are as effective today as they ever were.

Even the simplest assembly of shots--done skillfully--can create can create an amazing effect in the mind of the viewer.

To the right is an example of what I mean. It's a re-creation of a famous editing experiment from 80+ years ago. Watch the clip. Then, decide what you believe the man is thinking at the end of the clip.
