Sound > Mikes > Pickup Patterns > Omnidirectional

Omnidirectional
An "omnidirectional" pickup pattern means the mike picks up sound evenly in all directions.

These are actually the LEAST common types of mikes used in video production. Why? Consider the example of a newscaster doing a live report from a helicopter. We need to hear the reporter--not the helicopter. But an omnidirectional mike cannot discriminate and will pick up sounds equally in all directions. Not terribly useful in most situations.
