Sound > Technique > Talk Across Mike

Talk ACROSS the microphone, not INTO the microphone:
To avoid popping your "P" sounds, subjects should always talk across the mike, not directly into it. This is counterintuitive--people naturally want to lean into a mike and talk directly into it. I think there is a genetic predisposition in humans to lean into a mike and practically kiss it while talking. But even if your favorite rock star does it, that doesn't mean you should.

Talk ACROSS: Assume the white area is the zone where air puffs out of your mouth when you speak. You generally DON'T want to put the mike in this area. That's because the air that puffs out when you say "p" can mess up a microphone. It's true that wind screens (the round ball at the end of a mike) minimize this problem. Still, it's good to keep the mike out of the line of fire, so to speak.
