Camera Operation > Steady-Shot

Sony "Steady shot" in action: This shot is not too bad--but not as steady as it would be if the camera was on a tripod.

One gimmicky control that's actually sort of useful is the button that stabilizes the picture. They go by names like "steady-shot" or "sure-shot," but they all attempt to compensate for shaky camera work by smoothing out your wobbly shots. It’s fine to use these controls, but they are not a cure-all. For example, they won’t work if you are "zoomed in" on your subject, and they can’t compensate for really bad camerawork. I had a good laugh at a trade show when a camcorder manufacturer put their camera on one of those paint-can shakers to demonstrate how the stabilizing button worked. Sure, the shot was smoothed out, but I don’t think a paint shaker is a good representation of the average camcorder user (except those who have had WAY too many espressos).
