Composition > Panning

Don't pan! In this example of poor camera work, the shot pans all over. Instead, hold steady on each shot for at least 8 seconds.

The same rule applies to panning--which is the left-to-right or right-to-left movement of the camera. Mimicking the eye, camcorder users often pan all over. This is bad. Do not pan.

Again, watch any TV show and you will see precious little panning. The only panning professionals do is "motivated." That is, they pan to follow a moving object. They don't pan to take in the big vista at the beach. Not-panning, like not-zooming is counterintuitive. It's hard to stop. But it is an absolute must for professional camerawork.
